WV STATE SAFETY INSPECTION STATION

ABOUT ED'S MARATHON

WV State Safety Inspections

This section will give you an idea as to what goes on during a auto safety inspection.

The safety inspection is governed by the State of WV and administered by WV State Police.  The purpose is to maintain to the best extent possible, a safer driving environment on our roadways.  A well and safely maintained vehicle is inherently safer on the road, and less likely to have mechanical issue creating an unsafe condition resulting in loss of control ect.  In reality there is no perfectly safe vehicle, there are MANY more factors involved in mishaps and if we were to engineer all possible unsafe environments we would not have motor vehicles at all.  That's not reasonable,

Safety inspections help to ensure a "SAFER" environment by attempting to reduce as so much as possible those conditions that have been proven to either increase the risk of accident or increase the severity of an accident should one happen.

At Ed's Marathon we're proud of our safety inspections...  we value our customers life and will NOT allow a vehicle to leave our shop with a new inspection sticker if we know that the vehicle is not safe to operate.  We DO NOT Sell stickers, We perform the required inspection and then if it passes we will affix a current sticker to the windshield.

A few of the most common issues found that will fail your vehicle....

TINT-  Drivers and Passengers door glass on ANY vehicle will not have tinting darker than 35% light transmission..  Remember, factory glass is tinted to certain amounts and is included in the tint measurement to equal the 35%.  If your vehicles front doors are tinted to 80% light transmission and you ADD a 35% light transmission tint to that glass it will now be too dark to pass inspection.
We use a laser tint meter that will measure both the glass and the added tint together.
Passenger cars cannot have the tint darker than 35% ANYWHERE on the vehicle, utility vehicles, ie. station wagons, vans, pick ups, SUV's ect,  can have darker tint on glass rear of the drivers position and only if the vehicle has a passenger mirror. Again, the front drivers and passengers door glass cannot have tint darker than 35% light trans.

LIGHTS - ALL factory lighting must work as installed by the factory.  Fog lamps must turn off automatically when the headlamps are switched to high beam.  This includes those fog lamps added by the owner.  Those fog lamps cannot be installed higher than the headlamps and cannot be more than one set (2).  Underbody lighting is also not legal on any vehicles registered in the state, merely disconnecting them will not let the vehicle pass, they must be removed.

BODY PARTS - All body parts, panels, glass, ect must be present and in a safe condition.  Sheet metal must not have sharp edges, chrome bumpers with peeling chrome is VERY unsafe and is often overlooked by the driver.

Other areas inspected include:   Brakes, Exhaust, Suspension, Tires/wheels, Steering parts, Frame, Fuel tanks/lines, Seat belts, Horn, ABS, TPMS,
